Beat the Heat: What to Do (and What Not to Do) to Keep Your Pets Safe This Summer
by PetsDrugMart

Summer means long walks, lakeside lounging, and backyard play for the whole family, including your pets - but as the temperatures rise, so do the risks for your furry friends. A sunny day outdoors can be one of the season’s highlights, especially with a few simple precautions to keep your pet safe and comfortable throughout. To help you and your pet enjoy the hot months responsibly, here is a simple guide on what to do and what to avoid to keep your dog or cat happy, healthy, and protected this summer.

Do: Keep Your Pet Calm, Cool, and Collected

Always have fresh, cool water available both indoors and outdoors. Toss in a few ice cubes for an extra refreshing boost, especially after playtime or on scorching days. Help your pet stay comfortable inside by providing fans, cooling mats, or even a damp towel to lie on. During the hottest hours between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., keep them in shaded, well-ventilated areas. For a fun and tasty way to beat the heat, try making pet-safe frozen treats like frozen yogurt, broth cubes, or little goodies frozen in ice trays to keep your furry friend cool and entertained.

Brushing regularly also helps remove excess fur and keeps pets comfortable, but avoid shaving unless your vet recommends it. Your pet’s coat plays a key role in regulating their body temperature and shielding them from sunburn.

Don’t: Avoid Going Out During Peak Heat

Instead, head out early in the morning or after sunset. For good measure, use your hand to check the pavement temperature! If it’s too hot to touch for five seconds, it’s not safe for your pet to walk on.

To help prevent and treat paw irritation, dryness, and burns, consider these paw care products:

  • Dermoscent® BIO BALM®
This hydrating, water-resistant balm is made with organic-certified ingredients and designed for dry, rough areas like paws, noses, and elbow calluses. It also soothes interdigital irritation and superficial skin abrasions.

  • Nova Scotia Fisherman Pet Balm
Inspired by the iconic “Fix It All” Rescue Balm, this multi-use product delivers deep hydration and healing for rough paws, cuts, scrapes, and irritated skin. Perfect for adventures on the trail, the boat, or at home. Suitable for dogs and cats; check essential oil safety for felines.

  • PAWZ MaxWax
Great for year-round protection, this balm shields paws from heat burn, sand, snow, and chemical ice melters. Use it regularly to moisturize dry or cracked pads and protect paw pads and toe beans from harsh summer surfaces.

For a safe and enjoyable outing, always bring your pet with you when you leave the car. Even on mild days, temperatures inside a car can rise rapidly, quickly reaching over 120°F (49°C), so keeping them by your side ensures their comfort and well-being.

Know the Warning Signs of Heatstroke

Even with the best care, it is crucial to recognize when your pet might be in distress. Watch for signs like excessive panting or drooling, weakness or disorientation, vomiting, or collapse. If you notice any of these, move your pet to a cool, shaded area immediately and contact your veterinarian.

On especially hot days, Thornell A.O.E. (Animal Odour Eliminator) Wipes can offer a quick refresh while helping cool your pet down. These gentle, effective wipes are also great for neutralizing unpleasant smells after a long day outside.

With a few simple precautions and the right tools, you and your pet can make the most of the sunny season together. Stay cool and stay safe!
